About Bonita Springs

Bonita Springs is a city in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 32,797 at the 2000 census. According to the U.S Census estimates of 2005, the city had a population of 37,992.

Points of interest
Bonita Beach Park - a 2.5-acre (10,000 m²) beachfront park that features a boardwalk and swimming area. Sand dunes and coastal vegetation surround a gazebo and 8 picnic shelters.

Barefoot Beach Preserve Park - is 342 acres (1.38 km²) of natural land and one of the last undeveloped barrier islands on Florida's southwest coast. It is located on the border of Collier and Lee Counties and accessible by Bonita Beach Road.

Little Hickory Island Beach Park
There are also 10 beach accesses with public parking located up and down Bonita Beach.

Bonita Springs is located west of Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, a significant Bald Cypress reserve under management of the National Audubon Society.

The northern border of Bonita Springs is shared with Lover's Key State Park, a 1,616-acre (6.54 km²) park made up of four barrier islands. The park features nature trails for hiking and bicycling, a canoe launch, kayak and canoe rentals, acres of unspoiled mangroves and miles of pristine beaches. A haven for wildlife, the islands and their waters are home to West Indian Manatees, bottlenose dolphins, roseate spoonbills, marsh rabbits and bald eagles.

The Everglades Wonder Gardens features a large collection of Florida wildlife including exotic birds, panthers, alligators, flamingos and bears. The facility, originally opened in 1936 as both a wildlife exhibition and a refuge for injured animals, also boasts a botanical garden and a natural history museum.

The Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound Track is located in Bonita Springs.

Airports
Southwest Florida International Airport in nearby South Fort Myers serves over 7.5 million passengers annually.

Naples Municipal Airport in Naples is a smaller airport primarily for private aviation.

About Fort Myers:

Fort Myers is the county seat and commercial center of Lee County, Florida. Its population was 48,208 in the 2000 census. According to the 2006 U.S. Census Bureau's estimates, the population was 60,531.

The city is one of two major cities that make up the Cape Coral-Fort Myers MSA, the other being Cape Coral. As of July 1, 2006, the population estimate for the metropolitan area was 571,344.

Established in 1886, Fort Myers is the historical and governmental hub of Lee County. It is the gateway to the Southwest Florida region, which is a major tourist destination in Florida. The beaches are loaded with great hotels and low cost lodging. The winter homes of Thomas Edison (Seminole Lodge) and Henry Ford (The Mangoes), which are both primary tourist attractions in the region, are located on McGregor Boulevard in Fort Myers.

Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) is located southeast of the city in South Fort Myers, near Gateway and Lehigh Acres.

Secondary schools
Secondary schools in the area include:

Canterbury, a private school, was listed in Forbes's "Top 400 Schools to Get Your Kid into Harvard". Canterbury students have also won the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) Grand Award five times in the past 20 years.

Dunbar High School's Science Olympiad teams won 15th place overall in the 2007 Florida State Science Olympiad, including a win in the remote sensing category.
 
Fort Myers Senior High School, an International Baccalaureate school, was ranked as one of the best schools in the nation by Newsweek magazine.

Cypress Lake High School, which is notable for being one of the only high schools in the area that has a Center for the Arts. It specializes in media arts, music, dance, theatre, and visual arts.
Bishop Verot High School, a private, Roman Catholic high school in Ft. Myers, operated by the Diocese of Venice, Florida.

Boston Red Sox train in the area. This facility is adorned with their logo.Hammond Stadium in South Fort Myers is the home of the Fort Myers Miracle baseball club of the Florida State League, and is the spring training locale for the Minnesota Twins. The Boston Red Sox hold their spring training at City of Palms Park close to downtown Fort Myers.

Fort Myers hosts the Florida Everblades ECHL hockey team at Germain Arena, and Florida Firecats af2 arena football and the Florida Stingrays AIFA indoor football team at the Lee County Civic Center. 

For the golfing enthusiast, the Fort Myers Area (Bonita Springs, Cape Coral, Estero, Lehigh Acres and Sanibel Island) is home to over 50 of Southwest Florida's renowned 130 public and private golf courses. Florida's great weather combined with the scenic and challenging nature of these courses makes the area an excellent stop for the vacationing golfer.

The Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium is a private, not-for-profit, environmental education organization. Set on a 105-acre (0.42 km²) site, it has a museum, three nature trails, a planetarium, butterfly and bird aviaries, a gift shop and meeting and picnic areas.

The Winternats R/C car race, attended by people from around the world, takes place annually at the Lee County Civic Center.
